Indonesia military cooperation and the United States re-tender or restored as before the existence of a military embargo. This visit was marked by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates. In fact, the State Superpower gave the green light for Indonesia to buy six aircraft F-16 the latest. Since the U.S. embargo in 1992, TNI had trouble updating mostly weapons purchased from the State Abang Sam.
Approximately 30 minutes, Gates met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono at the Presidential Palace, Central Jakarta, Monday (25 / 2). In a meeting also attended by Minister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono was discussed increasing military cooperation between the two countries. Especially after Indonesia had embargoed in 1992 by the Santa Cruz incident in East Timor (Timor-Leste's name before the polls in 1999 - Ed.). Embargo is a ban on the purchase of training and weaponry from the United States.
Restoration of military relations between the two countries began in 1999 with the cooperation in the field of training military officers. The Gates visits also offer the purchase of the Hercules and the F-16 appears as a signal the removal of the military embargo against Indonesia.
However, this attitude criticized Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission I Yusron Ihza Mahendra. He asked the government to be decisive in determining the direction of Indonesia's defense policy.
America as a major seller of the world arms market is concerned with in Indonesia. Since the embargo imposed, Indonesia has to buy weapons to other countries such as Russia, the UK, even China
